bush & oil
i didn't get to see the state of the union address the other night but i sure read it in the times yesterday. it seems to me the best way to combat the current terror crisis from a long term perspective is to ween our dependence on oil, basically to find new ways to either consume less or find alternative resources of energy. for all the money this country spends on defense (which i think at times is justified) you would think that a small fraction of a fraction of it could be used for finding out about such alternatives. of course not. i don't know how factual all this is but i'm posting it anyway. this makes it all hit home:
* Cut funding by 28% for research into cleaner, more efficient cars and trucks
sure shrub.....that's just great.

interesting account in today’s NYT about the NYFD’s struggle to maintain communications after the attacks:
"Early on, we realized that a number of the companies were coming in and were not reporting to any staging area we established," Chief Hayden said. "So we were losing control of the companies coming. There was also communication problems later on with companies coming in, units responding to the second alarm after the other plane hit. They weren't sure which was World Trade Center 1 and World Trade Center 2. So that became confusing.”
it was one thing to witness the attacks from afar (acrros the river in jersey), but to be in the firehouse drinking coffee one minute and then to be in a war zone the next is almost impossible for me to imagine.
also first hand accounts from the NYFD.

on some nights you can stand at an intersection and actually watch the air move.
“i didn’t know why at the time,” it was the best explaination i had. later upon reflection it seemed to me that i had no business answering her question at all. i mean she was the one who let me go, right?
in january it can take a long time to warm up the car if the sun hasn’t peaked from behind the skyline yet. sometimes you can just get in the car, start it and go. the car being warmer than the windswept gray outside. i did this that morning. it was the only time that could be spent alone for this trip. jersey morning rush. the bridge and the barge underneath pushing containers up the Hudson. the winter sun peaking between units, squinting between my eyes. 83rd and riverside, a rare parking spot. she’s showering now and i'm a bit early. the breakfast seems like a chore. a bowl of fruit and a ham and egg sandwich. disconnected along the way, she drinks coffee and orange juice. i sit and feel like i should say more, she sits and says nothing. she talks about her new “friend.” i’m happy for her and she doesn’t understand that. i run her back downtown to get a mani-pedi or something. a hug and i'll see you when I see you.
“chris, you really need to move out of your house.”
i know this but there’s nothing i can say, i’m still there. she cries sometimes and i never, eventhough i'm sure i could.
